Augsburg Gets By Hamline in Game One

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN.—The Hamline University men's hockey team made the short trip to Augsburg for a Friday-night MIAC bout. Shots on goal were in favor of the Pipers 35-24, but it was the Auggies who pulled away with a 4-3 victory. 

Hamline falls to 7-13-2, 3-9-1 MIAC, while Augsburg improves to 12-8-2, 9-3-1 MIAC.

Six of the game's seven goals occurred over the final two periods after Augsburg took a 1-0 lead at 8:04 of the first off Kyler Yeo's tally. Hamline found the scoreboard at 4:12 of the second period, when Will Matzke knotted the score 1-1.

Augsburg took the driver's seat for good off goals from Nick Catalano at 16:24 of the second, and Daniel Chladek at 9:53 of the third widened the margin to 3-1. 

The Pipers managed to cut their deficit to one goal on two more occasions. Ryan Brandt did the honors at 13:14 of the third period that narrowed Hamline's deficit to 3-2. Just over a minute later, Tommy Carls pushed Augsburg's lead to 4-2 at 14:57. 

The Pipers pulled starting goaltender Maximilian Haselbacher at 18:54. It paid dividends at 19:07 of the third, when Kyle Mortenson made it a one-goal game again at 4-3.

Mortenson finished with one goal and one assist for the Pipers, while Brandon McNamara had two assists.

Maximilian Haselbacher had 20 saves in net for the Pipers, while Samuel Vyletelka made 32 stops.

The Pipers will host Augsburg at TRIA Rink tomorrow, Saturday, February 10 at 5 p.m.
