Bennies Hold Off Pipers In MLC Play

ST. JOSEPH, MINN.—The Hamline University women's lacrosse team traveled to Saint Benedict for a Wednesday-evening Midwest Lacrosse Conference match. This was the second meeting this season between both teams, as the Bennies won 16-6 in a non-conference bout at Klas Field on March 20. The margin was closer this time around, but it was Saint Benedict who held on to a 15-13 victory.

The Pipers fall to 7-8, 1-3 MLC, while the Bennies stay unbeaten in conference play with a 7-3, 4-0 MLC mark.

The first four shots of the contest belonged to Hamline. Two of them found the back of the net courtesy of Courtney Parker with 11:53 on the clock, and Maitland Luksan on the free position just :19 later with 11:34 remaining, which gave the Pipers a 2-0 advantage.

The Bennies countered that with the game's next five shots, It resulted in a 3-0 run that put them in front 3-2 with 9:27 remaining in the opening quarter. Saint Benedict never trailed from that point forward, but couldn't stretch their lead to more than three goals. 

The game was tied on six occasions, which included a 13-13 score with 4:30 left in the third frame. The Pipers peppered nine shots from that point forward, but couldn't find the back of the net. Emma Halweg scored the game-winning goal for St. Ben's with 2:56 left in the third, making the score 14-13. 

Despite having a 7-5 shots advantage in the fourth quarter, the Bennies widened the score to 15-13 courtesy of Emma Osland with 4:35 on the clock.

Saint Benedict out shot Hamline 45-34.

Maitland Luksan's five-point game included three goals and two assists on just three shots. Reigning MLC Offensive Player of the Week Avery Wilson notched a team-leading four goals and 10 shots. Analisa Aragon had three goals and one assist for the Pipers. Kendra Haselow led the way with four draw controls, while Maddie Swanson had a team-leading four caused turnovers to go with three draw controls. Lily Uhl paced Hamline with four ground balls.

Both teams combined for a perfect 31-of-31 in clears.

Sami Hackley had a game-high six goals for Saint Benedict.

Pipers goalie Lola Brouwer made 13 saves, while Chloe Lewis stopped 10 shots in net for the Bennies.

Hamline will host Northwestern (Minn.) in their final home game of the season on Saturday, April 27 at 1 p.m.
