SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The Hamline University women's soccer team opened their 2024 season with a 4-1 loss to Whitworth (Wash.) at Pat Paterson Field on Friday afternoon.
The Pipers fall to 0-1, while Whitworth improves to 1-0.

Kylee Russell's hat trick highlighted a Pirate offense that jumped to a 4-0 lead in the 54th minute. Whitworth's third shot of the game found the back of the net courtesy of Lily Cardenas in the ninth minute before Russell netted tallies in the 22nd, 25th, and 54th minutes. Baylee Trejo accounted for assists in each of Russell's final two goals.
Hamline spoiled Whitworth's shutout in the 81st minute, when freshman Christin Broyles netted her first collegiate goal off a feed from Maya Dempsey.
Piper goalkeeper Isabella Jensen made three saves over the first 45:00, before Cate Toal stopped four shots throughout the entire second half in net. Paige Broadrick and Kia Gary each made one save for the Pirates.
Whitworth out shot Hamline 23-7.
The Pipers will travel to Minnesota Morris on Tuesday, September 3 for a 3:30 p.m. game.
