ST. PAUL, Minn. — Gustavus Adolphus (3-4) defeated Hamline (1-6) 63-9 on Saturday at Klas Field, with Hamline's lone touchdown coming from a 51-yard pass in the first quarter.
The first quarter opened with Gustavus Adolphus quickly establishing their offense, scoring three consecutive touchdowns. Walker Britz capped off two successful drives with a 2-yard touchdown at 10:28 and another 1-yard score at 6:39. Dylan Blount also contributed with a 1-yard touchdown rush at 8:35. Forsythe Owen successfully converted all three extra points, giving Gustavus Adolphus a commanding 21-0 lead. Hamline responded with a 51-yard pass from
Jacob Aki to
D'Nari Adams, setting up a 16-yard touchdown pass to
Dawson Schaffer, narrowing the gap to 21-7. However, Britz's run into the end zone as the quarter ended increased Gustavus Adolphus's lead to 28-7.
Gustavus Adolphus extended their lead early in the second quarter with a swift 69-yard touchdown pass from Blount to Caden Kleinschmidt at 8:17. Hamline's subsequent possession was marred by a turnover, as
JuKari Blackshere fumbled following a five-yard reception, with Ethan Bartell recovering for Gustavus Adolphus at the Hamline 35-yard line. On the ensuing drive, Walker Hennen capitalized with a one-yard touchdown run at 5:58. Gustavus Adolphus capped the quarter with a three-yard touchdown rush by Blount with 48 seconds remaining. Forsythe converted the extra point, bringing the score to 47-7 in favor of Gustavus Adolphus by the end of the half.
In the third quarter, both teams struggled to gain significant yardage, resulting in a series of short drives. Gustavus Adolphus managed to add to their lead with a 15-yard field goal from Forsythe at the 2:59 mark, following a blocked punt by Hurley Vollertson that set them up at the Hamline 3-yard line. Hamline's offensive efforts were thwarted by strong defensive plays from Gustavus Adolphus, including a sack by Max Olson on quarterback Aki. With no touchdowns scored in the quarter, the period ended with Gustavus Adolphus leading 50–7.
In the fourth quarter, Gustavus Adolphus capitalized on a defensive interception by Alim Kamara, setting up a scoring opportunity that was completed with a touchdown pass from Blount to Alex Gross at 8:34. Hamline's defense managed to block the extra point attempt, but the visitors maintained control. Later in the quarter, Trevor Johnson added a one-yard rushing touchdown with 10 seconds remaining, and Forsythe converted the extra point to conclude the scoring. Hamline struggled offensively, with Aki's interception and a late sack by Torrin Smith leading to turnovers on downs.
Schaffer recorded four receptions for 44 yards and scored one touchdown. Aki completed 11 of 29 passes for 125 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
Croix Zacharias led the Pipers' defense with eight tackles and one sack.
Elijah Gingras and
Erik Aune both registered seven tackles.
The Pipers are now on the road for the rest of the season, heading up to Duluth next Saturday, November 1st to take on St. Scholastica at 1 PM.
