ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Hamline Pipers (0-1-0) fell to the (RV) University of Wisconsin-River Falls Falcons (2-1-0), 4-3, in a closely contested game at home. The Pipers rallied with three goals in the third period, including two power-play goals, but the Falcons secured the win with an overtime goal.
The first period between Hamline and UW-River Falls opened with a faceoff win for the Falcons. Both teams traded early scoring attempts, with
Joe Greniuk taking two wide shots for the Pipers. UW-River Falls' Zach Sondreal was penalized for slashing at 18:00, giving the Pipers a power play, but they were unable to capitalize despite multiple attempts, including a shot by
Owen Van Tassel that was blocked. As the period drew to a close, both teams hit the pipe, with Gavin Middendorf for the Falcons and
Cam VanSickle for the Pipers narrowly missing opening the scoring. The period ended scoreless, with both goaltenders, Brennan Boynton for the Falcons and
Keaton French for Hamline, holding their ground.
UW-River Falls extended their lead over Hamline in the second period with two goals. The first came at 9:12, when Ben Portner scored at even strength, assisted by Keenan Ingram and Gavin Middendorf. Later, at 18:39, Middendorf capitalized on a power-play opportunity, finding the back of the net with assists from Luke Margenau and Alex Atwill. Throughout the period, French made several saves to keep the score within reach, but the Falcons maintained a 2-0 advantage by the end of the period.
In a tightly contested final period, the Pipers overcame a two-goal deficit to draw level with UW-River Falls. The period began with a power-play goal from
Will Matzke at 15:58, assisted by Greniuk and
AJ Carls, narrowing the score to 2-2. The Falcons quickly responded with an even-strength goal by Burke Simpson to regain the lead at 13:28. However, Hamline's
Brock Carls scored twice, including a critical power-play goal with just 2:43 remaining, assisted by Dom Thomas and
Jack Lambert, tying the game at 3-3. Despite UW-River Falls calling a timeout, Hamline held firm to ensure the game ended in a draw.
The overtime period began with the Pipers winning the initial faceoff, but the Falcons capitalized on power play opportunities later in the frame. A blocked shot by Simpson and a shot hitting the pipe by Charles Levis highlighted the back-and-forth action early on. However, penalties on Levis and Thomas put the Pipers in a difficult position, allowing UW-River Falls to maintain pressure. Hunter Jones clinched the victory for the Falcons with a power-play, game-winning goal at 3:46, sealing a 4–3 overtime win.
Brock Carls led the team with two goals, including a power-play goal, and won 100% of his faceoffs. Matzke contributed one goal, converting on the power play.
AJ Carls tallied two assists, providing key playmaking support. French registered 26 saves in his starting effort.
The Pipers will finish out the weekend with another non-conference home game Saturday, November 8 in the early evening against UW-Stout, with puck drop at 5:00 PM.
