Pipers Fall to Gusties in Home Finale

SAINT PAUL, MINN.--On Friday night, the Hamline University men's hockey team fell to Gustavus Adolphus 6-5 OT in their 2024-25 home finale at TRIA Rink.

The Pipers fall to 7-17-0, 5-10-0 MIAC, while the Gusties improve to 14-8-2, 10-3-2 MIAC.

Gustavus 6, Hamline 5 OT

The first period began with a quick series of faceoffs and missed shots from both teams. Hamline's Brock Carls scored the opening goal at 4:51 with assists from Tommy and AJ Carls, giving the home team an early 1-0 lead. Shortly after, the Gusties responded with three-consecutive goals as a result of a Piper five-minute major, starting with Jac Triemert at 10:52, followed by Jack Suchy at 11:25, and Riku Brown at 11:40, shifting the momentum in favor of the visiting team with a 3-1 lead.

The second period began with Hamline's Brandon McNamara winning the initial faceoff, and both teams returning from penalties. At 3:16, Hamline's Cal Levis III scored an even-strength goal, assisted by Calvin Knight and Jackson Wille, temporarily tying the game at 3-3. The Gusties responded with a goal by Wilmer Svensson at 8:47, followed by another goal from Nick Mohs-Messerli at 12:25, which increased their lead to 5-2. Hamline closed the gap with a power-play goal by Will Matzke at 16:23, ending the period with a score of 5-3 in favor of the Gusties.

The third period started with a series of faceoff wins by the Pipers, including two by Brandon McNamara against Wilmer Svensson. The Gusties initially struggled to capitalize on their opportunities, with Hunter Newhouse and Joey Gimberlin missing shots early in the period. Hamline's Will Matzke scored an even-strength goal at 4:41 with assists from Carson Simon and Joe Greniuk, narrowing the game at 5-4. In the final minute, Carson Simon scored a short-handed goal with an extra attacker at 00:28, assisted by Will Matzke, securing a 5-5 tie. Despite a late penalty on Hamline's Jordon Halverson, the home team maintained their momentum to end regulation.

The overtime period began with a faceoff won by the Gusties' Wilmer Svensson against Hamline's Will Matzke. At 0:44 on the clock, the Gusties' Jack Wineman scored a power-play goal, assisted by Drew Holt and Wilmer Svensson, securing the game-winning point and ending the game with a 6-5 victory for the Gusties. This goal marked Wineman's seventh of the season and concluded the overtime period swiftly.

Will Matzke led the Pipers with three points, scoring two goals and adding one assist. He also had a power-play goal, highlighting his offensive contribution. Brandon McNamara showed his strength in faceoffs, winning 60% of them, which was a key factor in gaining possession for the Pipers. Cal Levis III and Carson Simon each had one goal, with Simon contributing an additional assist, making them notable offensive players for Hamline. Dallas Duckson stood out for his defensive role, having accumulated 15 penalty minutes, including one major penalty, indicating his physical presence on the ice. Trevor Wong made 22 saves in net for Hamline, who out shot Gustavus 33-28.

Jack Wineman was a key contributor with one goal and one assist, accumulating two points, and leading the team with a game-winning goal. His faceoff percentage was impressive at 75 percent, winning 12-of-16 attempts. Jac Triemert also showed strength, scoring one goal and maintaining a 66 percent faceoff win rate. Drew Holt led the team in assists with three, contributing to a total of three points, and boasted a perfect faceoff win percentage. Riku Brown and Nick Mohs-Messerli each scored a goal, with Mohs-Messerli achieving a notable faceoff win rate of 71 percent. Lastly, Oscar Carlryd was a significant defensive presence with two blocked shots. Colin Androlewicz stopped 28 shots between the pipes for Gustavus.

The Pipers will conclude their 2024-25 season at Gustavus Adolphus tomorrow, Saturday, February 22 at 7 p.m.
