SAINT PAUL, MINN.--The Hamline University men's basketball team defeated Macalester 80-55 at Hutton Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Pipers improve to 13-9, 9-4 MIAC, while the Scots fall to 7-14, 4-8 MIAC. Notably, the Pipers have now won five of their last six games against the Scots, which highlights their recent dominance in this matchup.
Hamline 80, Macalester 55
The first half saw a closely contested start. Macalester opened the scoring with a layup by Noah Shannon, setting the tone for an intense matchup. Hamline responded with a layup from
Brendan Ebel, and
Austin Holt contributed significantly by scoring two consecutive 3-pointers, helping the Pipers take a temporary lead at 11-4. Macalester's Berke Arslan and Kaden Holdbrook each made key 3-pointers, pushing their team ahead with a score of 21-17. In the final minutes, Noah Shannon's free throws extended Macalester's lead, and despite
Austin Holt's efforts with a 3-pointer at the end, Macalester finished the half ahead, 33-31.
The Pipers dominated the second half, outscoring Macalester 49-22 to secure a strong lead. Early in the half,
Austin Holt scored a pivotal three-pointer at 17:20 to break a tie and give the Pipers a 36-35 lead.
Brendan Ebel was instrumental, scoring multiple key baskets, including a layup at 3:23 that extended the lead to 69-53. Macalester struggled with turnovers, committing eight throughout the half, while Hamline capitalized on these opportunities to widen the gap and secure an 80-55 win.
Brendan Ebel stood out for Hamline with 13 points, along with leading in assists with five and contributing two blocks.
Bradley Cimperman led in rebounding with a total of 11, including nine defensive boards.
Austin Holt was the top scorer with 27 points, making seven of his 12 three-point attempts and also securing 11 rebounds.
Dominic Dosmann added 14 points to the team's effort, shooting six-of-eight from the field.
Noah Shannon led the Scots with a standout performance, scoring 16 points while making 7-of-10 field goal attempts, which was a team-high. Eric Wentz contributed defensively with two steals, marking his highlight for the game. Meanwhile, Logan Davis added nine points, connecting on 4-of-11 field goals, including one three-pointer. Marcus Crawford showcased his shooting efficiency by scoring six points, making both of his three-point attempts. Ryan Brush was active on the boards, securing six rebounds to support the team's effort.
The Pipers shot .476 (30-of-63), and .370 (10-of-27) from beyond the arc. They held Macalester to .367 (22-of-60) shooting and .250 (7-of-28) from the three-point line.
Hamline will host Carleton at Hutton Arena on Wednesday, February 12 at 7:30 p.m.
