Cobbers Come From Behind to Defeat Pipers

MOORHEAD, MINN.--The Hamline University men's hockey team fell to Concordia (Minn.) 6-4 on Saturday afternoon.

The Pipers fall to 7-16-0, 5-9-0 MIAC, while the Cobbers improve to 10-9-2, 6-4-2 MIAC.

The first period saw the Pipers take an early lead with a goal by Brandon McNamara at 2:52, assisted by Will Matzke and Carson Simon, capitalizing on a power play opportunity. Hamline extended their lead with additional goals by Tommy Carls at 5:27 and AJ Carls at 11:15. The Cobbers responded with a goal by Mason Plante at 13:14, but the Pipers quickly answered back with a goal from Cal Levis III at 13:38 that made the score 4-1.

In the second period, the Cobbers narrowed the gap with three goals to tie the game at 4-4 by the end. Mason Plante scored the first goal for Concordia at 2:19, assisted by Blake Johnson and Tucker Skime. Later, Ben Luedtke found the net at 13:48 with assists from Jack Westlund and Matthew Hard, followed by Tal Halliday's goal at 15:54, assisted by Jackson Lucia. The Pipers faced several challenges, including a significant penalty at 5:21, where Joe Greniuk received a five-minute major and game misconduct for contact to the head, leading to an extended power play for Concordia.

In the third period, the Cobbers secured a 5-4 lead with a goal by Hunter Olson at 3:15, assisted by Tal Halliday and Jackson Lucia, marking Olson's fifth goal of the season. Despite efforts from Hamline, including several saves by Trevor Wong against the Cobbers' shots, the home team extended their advantage to 6-4 with a goal from Matthew Hard at 15:08, assisted by Jack Westlund and Troy Dahlheimer, which was Hard's third of the season. Hamline tried to capitalize on power play opportunities following penalties on Concordia's Jack Westlund and Brady O'Brien, but they were unable to convert these chances into goals. Concordia's defense, including key saves by Dane Couture, helped maintain their 6-4 victory over the Pipers.

Brandon McNamara stood out for Hamline with a power-play tally. Cal Levis III made an impact with a goal. Thomas Carls contributed both offensively and defensively, scoring one goal and one assist, and winning 10 faceoffs. AJ Carls also had a goal and an assist. Trevor Wong made 22 saves in net for the Pipers, who finished 2-for-5 on the power play.

Hunter Olson made a significant impact with a game-winning goal for the Cobbers. Mason Plante led the way with two goals from five shots. Tal Halliday contributed effectively with one goal and one assist, maintaining a plus-minus of plus two. Matthew Hard also recorded one goal and one assist, contributing to the team's offensive efforts. Ben Luedtke is notable for his strong plus-minus of plus three, alongside scoring one goal. Dan Couture stopped 12 shots in net for Concordia, who out shot Hamline 28-16.

The Pipers will host Gustavus Adolphus at TRIA Rink on Friday, February 21 at 7 p.m.
