SAINT PAUL, MINN.—Courtney Parker's career-high five goals, and Reagan Zywicki's game-winning tally with 1:03 remaining highlighted the Hamline University women's lacrosse team in their 16-15 victory over Southwestern (Texas) at Klas Field on Sunday morning.
The Pipers, who now sport a three-game win streak, improve to 5-6, 3-2 WIAC. The Pirates fall to 1-13, 0-6 WIAC.
Hamline 16, Southwestern (Texas) 15
No lead changes and just four tied scores occurred in the contest despite the narrow outcome. The first half was highlighted by a Pipers' 5-0 run that gave them their largest cushion of the contest at 7-2, courtesy of Ali Suzuki's player-up tally with 13:20 remaining in the second quarter. Hamline didn't allow Southwestern to get within less than three goals of them from that point until halftime, much due to their 24-12 shots advantage and 12 draw controls.
The pendulum swung in Southwestern's favor in the second half, where they had the upper hand in goals 9-6 and shots 16-14. As a result, the Pirates managed to tie things for the first time since a 2-2 score early in the contest at 14-14 and 15-15 with 4:58 left in regulation thanks to goals from Grace Van Dinter and Ana Vines.
Despite Southwestern's stellar second half, they never led. Reagan Zywicki put an end to those ambitions with her 18th goal of the season, and fourth of the game with 1:03 on the clock to give Hamline a 16-15 victory. Zywicki's performance ended with four goals, three assists, a team-leading seven points, nine shots, and two caused turnovers.
Parker's big morning for the Pipers also included one assist for a six-point outing, 10 shots, six draw controls, and four ground balls. Lauren Moorhouse notched a team-leading nine draw controls, and five ground balls to go with one goal and two assists. A five-point outing was had by Avery Wilson, who finished with two goals and three assists along with two caused turnovers and two ground balls. Starkey tied for a team-leading three assists as well as one goal, while Emma Collins had two goals.
The Pipers won the shot (38-28), ground ball (21-10), and draw control (21-14) battles.
Cecelia Cantu carried Southwestern on her shoulders with a game-high eight goals, nine points, and 12 shots.
A whopping 20 infractions were assessed in the contest.
Emma Bethke stopped 11 shots in net for the Pirates, while Matilda Urbia made eight saves between the pipes for Hamline.
The Pipers will host UW-River Falls at Klas Field on Wednesday, April 16 at 5 p.m.
