MINNEAPOLIS, MINN.—For the first time since March 31, 2006, the Hamline University defeated Saint John's (Minn.) as they prevailed by a 5-4 decision at InnerCity Tennis on Saturday afternoon.
"Huge win for the men today at Inner City Tennis" said Pipers head tennis coach Spencer Jones. "We're gonna rename April 5 Brendon Sebring Day. So proud of these guys."
The Pipers, who've now won four of their last five matches, improve to 5-7, 2-3 MIAC. The Johnnies fall to 5-6, 1-3 MIAC.
Hamline 5, Saint John's 4
The doubles flight resulted in a 2-1 lead for Hamline thanks to an 8-7 win from Rumeal Setts/Tyler Rousslang at No. 1, and an 8-4 triumph from Cooper Johnson/Brendon Sebring at No. 3.
Setts, Johnson, and Sebring carried that momentum into singles. The No. 1 spot saw Setts prevail by a 6-2, 7-6 decision, while Johnson won a close match at No. 3 by a 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 score. The match-clinching win belonged to Sebring, who came up big 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 at No. 5.
The Pipers will host Macalester at Holt Courts on Tuesday, April 8 at 4:30 p.m.
