MANKATO, Minn. — The Hamline University women's soccer team and Bethany Lutheran College ended in a 1-1 draw on Saturday at Scheels Field, with both teams scoring a goal each in the second half.
The Pipers held a record of 2-1-3 overall. The Vikings stood at 0-4-1 overall.
Hamline 1, Bethany Lutheran 1
The first half saw Bethany Lutheran take an early lead against Hamline, with Elena Luján Rubio scoring the only goal in the 21st minute, putting the home team ahead. Prior to the goal, Hamline's
Addyson Barrett and
Anikka Shoholm each had attempts on goal, but were denied by Bethany Lutheran's goalkeeper, Arayah Baker. Hamline managed to create several opportunities, including corner kicks at the 10th and 44th minutes, but could not capitalize on them.
Isabella Jensen, Hamline's goalkeeper, kept her team in the match with crucial saves, notably stopping a shot from Paige Winkelmann in the 30th minute. As the half ended, the Vikings maintained their 1-0 advantage.
The second half began with a series of offensive attempts from Hamline, as
Danna Garcia's shot in the 46th minute went wide and
Elysse Tanaka's effort in the 49th minute was stopped by the Vikings' goalkeeper, Baker.
Ellie Nhean also tested Baker with a shot in the 51st minute, which was saved. Hamline's persistent attacks paid off when Tanaka found the back of the net in the 59th minute, leveling the score at 1-1. Despite several fouls and offside calls against them, the Pipers continued to press forward, with
Reese Keiffer and
Christin Broyles both coming close but were denied by Baker's saves. In the end, the teams settled for a 1-1 draw as the half concluded.
Tanaka scored a goal, converting one of her four shots, with three being on target. Barrett led the team with four shots and placed two on goal.
Mia Silva recorded a shot on goal out of her single attempt. Goalkeeper Jensen made two saves during her 90 minutes in net.
Baker played a crucial role for the Vikings, recording eight saves over 90 minutes in goal, facing 18 shots with only one goal allowed. Rubio was the standout offensive player, scoring the team's only goal and registering one shot on goal. Roxy Rehberg contributed with an accurate shot on goal, adding to Bethany Lutheran's attacking efforts.
The Pipers will host Concordia (Minn.) at Pat Paterson Field on Tuesday, September 16 at 4 p.m.
