Pipers Struggle Against St. Olaf Power Play

NORTHFIELD, Minn. — The Hamline Pipers fell to St. Olaf, 9-1, at the St. Olaf Ice Arena. The Pipers' lone goal came on a power play in the second period, while St. Olaf capitalized with four power-play goals to secure the victory.

The first period saw St. Olaf capitalize on an early power play to take a 1-0 lead over the Pipers. Evan Smutney netted the opening goal at 8:24, assisted by Kelijah McElroy, marking Smutney's second goal of the season. Hamline's Keaton French faced a barrage of shots, recording multiple saves to keep the game within reach. Despite several attempts, including a shot by Jacob Hicks that hit the pipe, the Pipers could not find the back of the net, and the period closed with St. Olaf ahead.

St. Olaf surged ahead in the second period with a series of quick goals, beginning just 11 seconds in when Nicholas Sewecke scored a power-play goal, assisted by Adam Johnson. Shortly after, at 19:28, Panayioti Efraimidis extended the lead to 3-0 with an even-strength goal, assisted by Gunnar Johnson. Tyler Green added another goal at 17:46, prompting a goalie change for Hamline. Jonathan Panisa increased the margin to five goals at 16:03, despite AJ Carls pulling one back for the Pipers on a power play at 10:49. Cody Kempf restored the five-goal advantage for St. Olaf at 7:14, concluding the period with a 6-1 lead.

St. Olaf dominated the third period, extending their lead with three goals. Connor McNaughton opened the scoring at 12:55 on a power play, assisted by Tony Leahy and Gunnar Johnson. Shortly after, Kempf scored at 13:14, with an assist from McElroy, bringing the score to 8-1. McElroy added another power-play goal at 16:35, with assists from Efraimidis and Camden Benson, sealing a 9-1 victory against Hamline. The period saw multiple penalties, but St. Olaf capitalized effectively on their power-play opportunities to secure a decisive win.

AJ Carls scored the lone goal on a power-play. Will Matzke posted a 55 percent faceoff win rate, securing 11 victories from the circle. Brock Carls contributed an assist and managed three shots. French, in net, finished with 17 saves on 21 shots faced. Turek finished with 12 saves on 17 shots during his time in net. 

The Pipers will have a pair of non-conference games on the road next against UW-Stevens Point and UW-Eau Claire, starting with UWSP on Friday, January 16 at 7 PM in Stevens Point, Wis.
