Pipers Battle to 2-2 Tie, Win Shootout Against (RV) St. Olaf

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Hamline (3-9-1, 3-3-1) and St. Olaf (6-2-4, 2-1-2) battled to a 2–2 tie at home, with both teams unable to break the deadlock in overtime. Hamline comes away with the extra point with a 1-0 shootout win.

The first period began with the Pipers winning the opening faceoff, setting the tone for a competitive start. Despite several attempts from St. Olaf, including a saved shot by Keaton French at 18:01, neither team found the back of the net until late in the period. St. Olaf broke the deadlock at 15:39 when Adam Johnson scored his fifth goal of the season, assisted by Willy Johnson and Hunter Hayes. Hamline managed 10 shots, but Matthew Malin's goaltending kept them scoreless as the period ended with St. Olaf leading 1-0.

Nikolai Dulak tied it up 1-1 at 15:31 of the second period, scoring even strength with assists from Will Matzke and Nicolas Haviar. St. Olaf quickly responded when Hunter Hayes took the lead again at 6:40, assisted by Willy Johnson and Adam Johnson. Both teams exchanged multiple shot attempts throughout the period, with Malin making several key saves for St. Olaf and French doing the same for the Pipers. The period ended with St. Olaf holding a narrow 2–1 lead.

Hamline tied the game at 2–2 during the third period with a power-play goal by Jack Lambert at 11:31, assisted by Cam VanSickle and Tyler Jordan. St. Olaf applied pressure early, keeping French busy with multiple saves, including blocked shots by Matzke and Joe Greniuk. Despite facing a penalty kill after Greniuk's interference penalty, Hamline's defense held firm, preventing St. Olaf from capitalizing on their power play. Both teams exchanged possession frequently in the closing minutes, but neither could break the deadlock, resulting in a tie.

The overtime period began with Matzke winning the faceoff for Hamline, setting the tone for the session. Despite early attempts by Tristen May-Robinson and Calvin Knight, both shots were saved by St. Olaf's goaltender, Malin. Hamline continued to control the faceoff circle, winning multiple draws, including those by Dulak and AJ Carls. St. Olaf called a timeout with 1:06 remaining in an effort to shift momentum. Defensive efforts, notably Kyle Mortenson's block of a shot by Gunnar Johnson, kept the period scoreless, concluding the game in a draw after no goals were scored in overtime.

In the decisive shootout period, Hamline emerged victorious after a tense back-and-forth. French stood firm in goal for Hamline, denying all three attempts by St. Olaf, including a critical stop against Panayioti Efraimidis. Greniuk capitalized on his opportunity, scoring the lone successful shot against Malin to secure the win.

Dulak scored one goal and won 5 of 7 faceoffs, achieving a 71 percent faceoff win rate. Lambert netted a power-play goal, his first career goal. French contributed with 29 saves while allowing two goals, maintaining a steady presence in the net.
