ST. PAUL, Minn. — Hamline defeated Bethany Lutheran 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-21) Tuesday at Hutton Arena. The Pipers finished with 39 kills and a .200 hitting percentage, compared with 25 kills and a .061 mark for Bethany Lutheran.
Hamline took the opening set 25-20, closing from a 20-20 tie with five consecutive points and winning seven of the final eight rallies. The Pipers recorded 16 kills to Bethany Lutheran's nine, with
Lexi Helmin and
Sophia Johnson each finishing with six kills and
Cameryn Sand assisting on 14 of Hamline's kills.
Hamline recorded 13 kills in the second set, led by four from
Sophia Johnson and three each from
Ashley Norberg and
Lexi Helmin, while Sand assisted on 11 of those points.
Monica Robles added two service aces, and the Pipers turned an early 1-2 deficit into a 6-3 edge before taking the set 25-18.
Hamline took the third set 25-21, using an 8-0 run after a 3-3 tie that included seven straight service points by Sand to build an 11-3 lead. The Pipers held a 10-7 kills edge in the set, led by five from
Sophia Johnson, while Bethany Lutheran recorded four service aces but also committed six service errors.
Sophia Johnson led Hamline with 15 kills and 15.5 points. Sand recorded 32 assists, 11 digs, one service ace and one block assist.
Lexi Helmin finished with 11 kills on a .450 hitting percentage and added two block assists.
Hamline is 4-11 overall and 1-2 in MIAC play. Bethany Lutheran is 3-13 overall and 2-2 in UMAC play.
