DE PEREÂ Wis. --- Hamline men's tennis battled in a tight non-conference matchup at the Green Bay Tennis Center on Thursday afternoon, but came up just short in a 5-4 loss to St. Norbert.
The Pipers grabbed an early point in doubles play as the No. 2 team of Matthew George and Max Gulliford earned a 6-4 win. St. Norbert responded with narrow victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles.
Hamline picked up three singles wins, highlighted by straight-set victories from George at No. 3 (6-4, 6-3) and Wesley Saunders at No. 6 (6-3, 6-1). Gulliford added another point with a thrilling three-set win at No. 4 singles, pulling out a 6-0, 2-6, 20-18 victory in the super tiebreak.
Despite a hard-fought three-set match from Brendon Sebring at No. 2 singles, St. Norbert secured the final points needed to edge Hamline and earn the 5-4 win.
