SARTELL, Minn. --- Hamline men's tennis opened MIAC play with an impressive 5-2 road win over Saint John's University on Friday evening at Sta-Fit in Sartell, Minnesota.
The Pipers took control early by winning two of three doubles matches.
Wyatt Crowell and Brendon Sebring earned a 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles, while
Matthew George and Max Gulliford followed with a 6-4 win at No. 2. Saint John's claimed the No. 3 spot, but Hamline carried a 2-1 edge into singles play.
Hamline dominated at the top of the lineup in singles.
Crowell rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1, and
Sebring matched that score with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 2.
Gulliford added a key three-set win at No. 4, battling back for a 4-6, 7-5, 10-3 triumph in the super tiebreak.
The clinching point came at No. 6 singles, where
Wesley Saunders outlasted his opponent in another tight three-set match, 7-5, 5-7, 10-8.
With the win, Hamline improves to 1-0 in MIAC play and 1-4 overall on the season.
