Pipers Split Double Header Matches With Carleton And Central

NORTHFIELD, Minn. --- The Hamline University men's tennis team split a Saturday doubleheader on March 7, dropping a conference match to Carleton College before recording a non-conference victory over Central College. In both contests, the Pipers showed strength in the doubles session, securing the doubles point each time under the format where winning two or more flights results in a single team point.

The Pipers faced a tough Carleton squad and once again jumped out to a 1-0 lead. George and Gulliford secured the doubles point for Hamline with their 6-4 win. Despite the early lead, Carleton's depth in singles proved difficult to match as they claimed five of the six flights. However, the individual highlight of the day belonged to Wyatt Crowell at number one singles. Crowell capped off an undefeated day by upsetting the nationally 34th-ranked Garapati in a 3-6, 6-4, 10-6 marathon. While Crowell's performance gave the Pipers a second point, Carleton swept the remaining five matches in straight sets to take the 5-2 win.

Hamline then played Central that evening and dominated early with a sweep of the doubles competition. Wyatt Crowell and Brendon Sebring set the pace at the top spot with a 6-4 win, while Matthew George and Max Gulliford cruised to a 6-1 victory at number two. Wesley Saunders and Jonah Wendt completed the sweep with a 6-4 win at the third position. The Pipers carried that momentum into singles play, where they secured four of the six points to finalize a 5-2 victory. Crowell and Sebring both showcased resilience at the top of the lineup, as Crowell overcame a first-set loss to defeat Bodi Kortz 3-6, 6-2, 10-5, and Sebring followed suit with a 1-6, 7-5, 10-3 comeback win at the number two flight. Max Gulliford added a straight-set 6-3, 6-2 victory at number four, and Wesley Saunders earned a 6-5, 6-2 win at the six spot to round out the Hamline scoring.
