ORLANDO, Fla. --- The Hamline University men's tennis team opened its spring break trip in Orlando, Florida, with a hard-fought 4-3 loss to Roger Williams University on Monday morning at Lake Cane. In a match that came down to the final singles flight, the Pipers saw standout performances from the top of their lineup despite falling just short in the team scoring.
The contest began with a competitive doubles session where the Hawks managed to secure the lone doubles point by taking two of the three matches. Roger Williams earned victories at the number one and number three positions, winning 6-2 and 6-4, respectively. Hamline's Matthew George and Max Gulliford provided the highlight of the session for the Pipers, putting a point on the board at number two doubles with a gritty 6-4 victory over Camden Poitras and Will Hurlbut.
Transitioning into singles play, the two squads battled to a 3-3 split across the six flights. Wyatt Crowell continued his impressive season at the number one spot, overcoming a first-set setback to defeat Bronson DeSisto in a three-set thriller, 5-7, 6-1, 10-7. Matthew George also showcased his resilience at the number three position, rallying from a set down to claim a 4-6, 6-2, 10-1 victory over Camden Poitras. Max Gulliford earned the Pipers' third singles point with a dominant straight-set performance at number four, defeating Om Seth 6-3, 6-3.
Despite the strong play in the middle of the order, Roger Williams secured the overall victory with wins at the remaining positions. Ryan Carroll took a straight-set win at number two singles, and Will Hurlbut edged out Liam Smith at the fifth flight. The match was ultimately decided at number six singles, where Jackson Slattery outlasted Wesley Saunders in another three-set battle, winning 6-2, 3-6, 10-4 to clinch the fourth and final point for the Hawks. Following the 4-3 result, the Pipers' record moves to 2-6 on the season as they continue their slate of matches in Florida.
