Pipers Drop Conference Match 6-1 To St. Scholastica

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. --- The Hamline University men's tennis team returned to Minnesota for a conference showdown against The College of St. Scholastica on March 23, 2026, at InnerCity Tennis in Minneapolis. The Pipers struggled to gain early momentum and ultimately fell to the Saints by a 6-1 margin.

The contest began with St. Scholastica sweeping the doubles session to secure the opening point of the afternoon. Mateo Torre and Eamon Gerrard-Stace took the top flight with a 6-1 win over Wyatt Crowell and Brendon Sebring, while the Saints earned hard-fought 6-4 victories at both the second and third positions over the pairings of Matthew George and Max Gulliford and Liam Smith and Wesley Saunders.

In singles play, Wyatt Crowell provided the highlight for Hamline at the number one position. Crowell continued his strong season with a dominant 6-3, 6-0 straight-set victory over Mateo Torre to earn the Pipers' lone point of the match. The Saints, however, regained control across the rest of the lineup. Brendon Sebring and Liam Smith fell in straight sets at the second and fifth flights, respectively, while Matthew George dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision at number three.

The most competitive matches of the day occurred at the fourth and sixth flights, both of which required third-set tiebreakers to decide a winner. Max Gulliford displayed great resilience at number four, bouncing back from a first-set loss to force a decider before narrowly falling to Finn SchulzeTopphoff 7-5, 3-6, 10-7. Similarly, Wesley Saunders fought back at the sixth spot to win the second set, but Harper Dircks managed to edge him out in the tiebreaker for a 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 win. Following the result, Hamline's record stands at 3-8 on the season.
