CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa --- Hamline defeated Coe 1-0 on Tuesday at Clark Field. The game's only goal came at 88:14 on a penalty kick after the teams remained scoreless deep into the second half. The Pipers held an 11-3 shot advantage, including 6-3 in shots on goal, and recorded a shutout with three saves.

 

Hamline is now 1-0-0 overall and Coe is 0-1-0 overall after the first official game of the season. 

 

Hamline generated the early chances, with Alexis Geary shooting at 5:15 and Ellie Nhean putting an attempt on frame that Lilly Monroe saved at 8:27, followed by an Elysse Tanaka shot at 10:20. The Pipers kept the attack going through a set-piece stretch, earning corner kicks at 14:33, 15:07 and 19:13 while Danna Garcia and Nhean added shots in between. Coe recorded its first shot at 21:44 when Maggie Preuss had a bottom-right attempt saved, and Hamline earned a late corner at 42:18 and a Neva Woodson shot at 42:52 before the first half ended 0-0.

 

After a Coe yellow card to Elly Manning at 55:42, Hamline created the first recorded chances of the half when Geary had a shot saved at 56:16 and the visitors earned corner kicks at 57:25 and 64:32. The half moved through a 70th-minute stretch with fouls on Addyson Barrett and Nhean and a yellow card to Nhean before the Pipers and Coe traded pressure. Tanaka forced a Lilly Monroe save at 73:53, Coe's Maggie Preuss had an attempt saved at 74:27, and Hamline came back with saved shots from Barrett and Woodson before Coe's Chloe Meiners put one on frame at 83:28. A late Coe foul preceded Hamline's penalty kick goal at 88:14, which accounted for the second half's only goal as the Pipers finished off a 1-0 win.

 

Sharleen Garcia scored the unassisted game-winning goal on her lone shot on the penalty kick and Sharis Garcia recorded three saves over 90 minutes in net for a shutout. Nhean finished with two shots, including one on goal. Geary added two shots and put one on frame. Tanaka also recorded two shots with one on goal.
