ST. PAUL, Minn. — Hamline played Augsburg to a 0-0 tie Saturday at Pat Paterson Field. The Pipers withstood five Augsburg attacking actions over the final 9:39 without conceding to close out the scoreless result.
The Pipers pushed through a physical first half and created late pressure, earning two corner kicks and forcing multiple saves before the break, but the half finished without a goal. Earlier,
Johanso Camacho sent a shot high in the fourth minute and
Beniam Makonnen put an attempt on frame in the seventh, with Augsburg goalkeeper Finnur Mercier making the save.
Brandon Cruz Rojas kept Augsburg off the board with saves on Asher Johnson in the 14th minute and Christopher Plaza Alvarado in the 21st. The match tightened during a card-filled stretch after the 25-minute mark, and Hamline followed with corner kicks at 31:44 and 32:12 before
Edgar Flores Vasquez and
Augustine Feika each had shots saved at 34:06.
A late penalty opportunity gave the Pipers a chance to break the scoreless match, but Makonnen's 85th-minute attempt was saved by Finnur Mercier before Hamline earned a corner seconds later. Earlier, Hamline opened the half with sustained pressure, getting a shot from Makonnen, two quick corners and two shots from Camacho before adding another corner in the 56th minute. Cruz Rojas kept Augsburg off the board with saves in the 64th and 82nd minutes as Hamline worked through a late stretch that included Augsburg shots and a corner. The half grew more physical in the closing minutes, including
Faith Gnadji's yellow card at 88:33, and the Pipers finished the final segment with the match still tied 0-0.
Cruz Rojas played all 90 minutes in goal, made four saves and recorded a shutout. Makonnen led Hamline with two shots on goal and shared the team lead with three total shots. Camacho matched Makonnen with three shots.
Hamline is 2-2-3 overall and 0-0-2 in conference play. Augsburg is 1-0-4 overall and 0-0-1 in conference play.
