GRINNELL, Iowa — Hamline lost to Grinnell College 5-1 on Saturday at Springer Field. Hamline led 1-0 at halftime before Grinnell scored all five of its goals in the second half. Hamline put four of its seven shots on goal and recorded five saves, while Grinnell finished with 15 shots and 10 on goal.
Beniam Makonnen put Hamline in front in the first half, converting a penalty kick at 19:52 to open the scoring and make it 1-0. The Pipers kept pressure on shortly after the goal, with
Augustine Feika forcing a save from Jack Alexander in the 22nd minute. Hamline added two corner kicks in a short stretch, at 26:04 and 31:32, before
AJ Jueseah sent a shot wide left.
Alec Setterberg preserved the advantage with a save on Kanata Mizutani in the 35th minute, and Hamline went into halftime leading Grinnell 1-0.
Hamline's 1-0 advantage was erased early in the second half, with Oliver Klemm scoring for Grinnell off Samuel Gojjam's assist at 47:08 to tie the match at 1-1.
Johanso Camacho sent a shot high 29 seconds later, and the Pipers played through a physical middle stretch that included fouls on both teams, Setterberg's save at 58:08, Setterberg's red card and Jack Pennachio's penalty-kick goal at 60:29. Camacho put another shot on goal at 61:05, but Kanata Mizutani scored at 65:43 to put the score at 3-1, and
Brandon Cruz Rojas followed with three saves as Grinnell continued generating shots. Hamline added late attempts from Jueseah and
Anthony Porter, but Grinnell also got goals from Gojjam and Amore Watanabe and closed out a 5-1 final after outscoring Hamline 5-0 in the second half.
Makonnen scored Hamline's goal, finishing with two points on his lone shot. Cruz Rojas recorded three saves in 26:58 in goal. Setterberg made two saves over 60:29. Camacho tied for the team lead with two shots and put one on goal.
Hamline is 0-1-1 overall. Grinnell is 2-0-0 overall.
