Dan Bartkowiak will likely remember his first college goal for a long time.
The freshman took a pass from Andrew Herbert for the deciding goal as Hamline earned its first men's hockey victory of the season, 2-1, over Bethel in Blaine.
Bartkowiak's goal came 12:07 into the final period and snapped a 1-all tie to reverse the verdict from the night before. John Sellie-Hanson kicked away 25 shots to earn his first college victory in goal.
The Pipers outshot the Royals in all three periods, finishing with a 33-26 edge for the night.
HU struck first as Tyler Gonzales finished off a nifty three way play with Kevin Novakovich and Joe Rubbelke for a power play tally 8:56 into the game. The Royals evened things with a power play goal of their own midway in the second frame.
That meant the next goal would be the decider ... and Bartkowiak took care of that to give HU a lead. The Royals challenged late, pulling their goalie in the final minute. But Sellie-Hanson held firm and HU improved to 1-8-1 overall, 1-3 in the MIAC.
The Pipers will host their alumni on Friday, December 13 at Oscar Johnson Arena at 6:30 p.m. The next night, they have a 7:00 p.m. rematch with UW-River Falls at 7:00 p.m. The teams tied 2-2 last month in Wisconsin.
