Buck, Eickman In Midseason Form as Pipers win Opener

2/21/2013 10:18:00 PM

Box Score It may be mid-February but Jordan Buck and Matt Eickman looked in mid-May form. Buck knocked in four runs and Eickman gave up just one hit in five innings as Hamline gave new head baseball coach Jim Weyandt a victory in his first game as head coach with a solid 9-1 victory over Northwestern (MN) Thursday at the Metrodome.

The Pipers banged out eight hits and took advantage oif eight walks and four hit batters to get the win. HU started fast, scoring three times in a first inning that contained two hits, two hit batters and two stolen bases. Buck (pictured), who had singled home a run in the fourth, sent home two more in a three-run fifth that broke the game open.

That was more than enough for Eickman, who gave up a first inning single and allowed just oneother runner (and that came on an error) in a nifty 55 pitch effort. The senior walked none and fanned three.

The second game of the doubleheader had to be called to a time limit. Northwestern was leading 3-2 at the time with Hamline about to come to the plate. The game will be finished at Northwestern at a date to be determined in April.

The Eagles forged a 3-0 lead only to see HU work its way back into the game on Mark Radmacher's two RBI single in the 5th inning. Hamline loaded the bases in the sixth with two outs but failed to score. When the game does resume, Jordan Rubbelke, who is 2-for-3 in the game so far, will be leading off the top of the seventh. Dan Ellefson and Casey Benford pitched for the Pipers.

Hamline returns to the Metrodome on Tuesday, February 26 when they face Bethany Lutheran in a doubleheader that is scheduled to begin at 11:45 a.m.
