Box Score All day long at the Metrodome,
Jordan Buck (31) and
Dan Moro (26) kept getting on base. As a result, the Hamline baseball team had a very good day against Bethany Lutheran.
Beck and Moro, the top two hitters in the HU batting order, got on base a collective 13 times in 16 plate appearances as the Pipers defeated the Vikings, 4-1 and 8-3.
Matt Eickman and
Dan Ellefson had solid starts on the mound to help Hamline move to 3-0 under first year head coach
Jim Weyandt.
In the opener, No. 3 hitter
Jordan Rubbelke severed a 1-1 tie with a searing two-RBI single in the fourth inning. HU added another run and then turned things over to Ellefson (2-0), who was his usual efficient self, using just 60 pitches in five innings. He gave up a first inning run on three hits.
Casey Benford worked the final two innings to earn the save.
HU scored early and often in the nightcap. They garnered a pair in the first inning and another in the second to stake Ellefson (1-0) to an early lead. Moro had a RBI double as part of a two run fourth inning and duplicated the feat in a three-run sixth frame that put the game out of reach. Ellefson gave up an unearned run on three hits to get the win.
Hamline is off until Monday, March 4 when they face UW-Stout in a doubleheader at the Metrodome that is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. On March 6, the Pipers step up in caliber with a nine-inning game against the University of Minnesota. Last year, HU took the Golden Gophers to 16 innings before falling 3-2.
