8 Straight For HU Baseball Team

Box Score The 2013 version of Hamline baseball is quickly becoming one for the books -- the record books. The Pipers made it eight wins in a row -- their longest streak since who knows when -- with a 7-6 decision over Buena Vista Monday in Tucson, Arizona.

Hamline is now 11-3 overall. Past baseball records are a little sketchy. It is known that HU won seven in a row in 2006. But eight across the board? We're checking into the dusty archives to see when (if at all) such a string took place.

(The 2011 team that won a school record 29 games had a pair of six-game streak sandwiched around a single loss.)

For now, however, the Pipers will just enjoy the current tale of the tape.

The latest win was a bit messy at times and a little harried at the finish. But when push came to shove, winning pitcher Zach Brautigam (1-0) and the trio of hurlers that followed him (including Rannon Arch, who got the last out for his second save) shut the door.

Jordan Rubbelke and Mark Radmacher each had two hits, scored twice and knocked in a run to key an eight-hit attack.

The big blows came in a five 4th inning. BVU had erased a 2-0 HU advantage with two runs of their own in the top of the inning. The Pipers batted around in the bottom of the frame. With Dan Moro on third, Rubbelke tripled to break the tie for good at 3-2. Radmacher followed with his sixth double of the season to make it 4-2. Harley Thompson (pictured) later added a RBI single and an error opened the door for two more runs to score.

BVU pecked away, though and the game was still very much in doubt in the ninth inning. A pair of two out, nobody on walks  complicated matters but Arch save the day by retiring Weston Foxx, a .367 hitter on a fly ball to right field to end the game.

The Pipers have one more Arizona test before returning home. They face Oberlin College (6-4) in a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 26.

HU is scheduled to open the MIAC season March 30 at St. Thomas.
