Softballers Rally For Split With Scots

4/14/2013 8:45:00 PM

Box Score For the second straight doubleheader, Hamline's softball team had to shake off a disheartening loss to gain a split in a key conmference battle.

For the second straight time, they were up to the task. Laura Randall's bases-loaded walk produced the winning run that gave HU a 4-3 win in the second game of a twinbill against Macalester that was played in the Rochester (Minn.) Dome. It gave the Pipers (8-8 overall, 4-2 MIAC) a sense of satisfaction after a 11-10 loss in the opener.

The win came after HU trailed 3-0 after two innings. The Pipers, led by Jenna Dushaw (who went 2-for-3 with a run scored), scored single runs in four consecutive innings to get the comeback win. Bri Vela pitched a complete game six-hitter to gain the victory.

In the lidlifter, Randall got the Pipers off to a good start with a two-run homer in the top of the first inning. The Scots got a run back in the bottom of the inning and scored five in the third for a 6-2 edge. Dushaw's bases-clearing triple highlighted a five-run fith that helped take a 7-6 lead. The Scots tied it up in the bottom of the inning only to see HU break the tie in the sixth and get two more in the seventh for a 10-7 advantage.

Macalester, however, rallied for four runs in the last of the seventh to sneak away with the win. Randall added a pair of doubles and finished with three RBI for the game while Dushaw went 2-for-5.

Unfortunately for the Pipers, they will have a longer time than expected to enjoy the second game win. The Pipers and Concordia's doubleheader, which had been postponed twice and was scheduled to take place Monday at 11 a.m. in West St. Paul. But the Cobbers are unable to get down I-94 due to bad weather. So the teams will have to wait again to play their pair of games. No makeup date has been set yet.

HU's next scheduled action is Tuesday, April 16 against St. Benedict. The games are currently slated for 3:30 p.m. at Meredith Field but might be moved. Stay tuned.
