HU Softballers Happy to Play Inside Anywhere They Can

4/14/2013 8:38:00 AM

With the MIAC softball season scheduled to end in a little more than two weeks, the time has come for teams to start playing games whereever ... and whenever ... they can.

So it is that Hamline and Macalester's softball teams will head 77 miles away from the originally scheduled site of today's doubleheader and meet up in Rochester, Minn at 11:00 a.m. this morning.

The Pipers (7-7, 3-1 MIAC) haven't played since last Monday, when Samantha Mau's two out, 2 RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted them to a 7-6 second game victory over St. Catherine at Meredith Field. It somewhat erased the memory of the opener, an 11-3 six-inning setback.

Much to their dismay, the Scots (10-12, 2-2) are equally well-rested. They haven't seen enemy pitching -- inside or outside -- since losing a pair to Carleton that afternoon.

Hamline will also join the Boston Red Sox in celebrating Patriots Day -- Monday, April 15 -- with morning activity. While the Red Sox will play their annual morning game in 101-year old (and, this weekend at least, wet and cold) Fenway Park, the Pipers will head to the newer (and drier) West St. Paul Dome to face Concordia in a pair set to start at 11:00 a.m. The games had originally been scheduled for Meredith Field but have been postponed twice due to the poor conditions.

As frustrated as the Pipers may be about the weather, the Cobbers (3-9) may be even antsier. They haven't even played a league game in 2013. Their last on-field action was March 22 when they defeated Northland twice (9-1, 6-4)  in the Vadnais Heights Dome.

HU head coach Jim Rubbelke said his team may well have to move Tuesday's scheduled Meredith Field dh with St. Ben's to the same facility atr a time to be determined. (A decision on that will be made no later than Monday.)

The West St. Paul dome is located at 1655 Livingston Ave, West St. Paul, MN 55118.
