Vela Wins Sixth In a Row As Softballers Split At Bethel

4/27/2013 8:12:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 That is quite the run Bri Vela is on these days. The junior righthander won her sixth game in a row as Hamline rapped out 12 hits and salvaged a split of a doubleheader at Bethel with a 7-4 win.

The junior upped her won-loss record to 10-4 and lowered her ERA to 4.23 as the Pipers battered Royal pitching for 12 hits. The top of the batting order did most of the damage as leadoff hitter Bethany Hine and number two swinger Laura Randall each went 2-for-3. No. 3 swatter Jamie Rubbelke one upped them with a 3-for-4 game. DH Cecily Abbadessa added two hits and two RBI as Hamline improved to 15-11 overall, 11-5 in the MIAC.

Coming to the third inning of Game 2, the Piper bats had been mostly quiet. They managed just two hits in the opener -- a five-inning, 9-0 loss. They hadn't done much in the second game until, with Hine, Randall and Rubbelke all singled to load the bases. (Coincidentally, Hine and Randall now lead the Pipers in batting average at .360 and Rubbelke is third at .338). Lauren Turitto knocked in one run with a sacrifice fly. Another run scored on an error and Abbadessa sent in two more with a single. The Pipers added a pair in the sixth inning and another in the seventh to give Vela more than enough of a cushion.

The junior scattered six hits, gave up just two earned runs and did not walk a batter for the fourth straight game. She has seen her era drop by a run and a half in this streak.

The Pipers better not be resting on Sunday. They host first place St. Thomas (28-6, 15-1) at Meredith Field in a doubleheader that will begin at 1:00 p.m.
