Box Score 2 Hamline's baseball team brought their hitting shoes to Midway Stadium Sunday. The Pipers banged out 29 hits -- including nine doubles and a triple in a 7-6, 13-2 sweep of Macalester. Coupled with a pitching dominated sweep of St. John's on Saturday, the Pipers have come back to the .500 mark in MIAC play at 4-4 and now stand an impressive 17-7 overall.
It got a little tight at the end byt HU held off the Scots just in time for the first game win. Down 3-1 in th fourth inning, HU used triples by
Jordan Buck and
Mark Radmacher to key a three-run rally that put them ahead at 4-3. The Scots came back in the fifth to tie the game at 4 but the Pipers untied it for good with a three-run sixth inning.
With one out,
Dan Moro singled and moved to second on an error. Radmacher doubled him home to break the tie and
Harley Thompson, who had a very good day at the plate, later added a two RBI single that proved vital to the cause.
That's because the Scots nicked
Rannon Arch for a two run home run to make it 7-6. Arch, who ended up the winning pitcher in relief of
Zack Brautigam, then got the final out to nail down the win.
There was no such drama in the second game. The Pipers scored in the first five innings, finishing off with a six-run flourish in the fifth frame. HU doubled down early and often, racking up eight two-baggers. Buck, Radmacher and Thompson had a pair apiece. Buck, Radmacher and
Dan Ellefson drove in three runs each.
Rob Miller pitched five scoreless innings of relief to earn the win.
The Pipers continue to make up for lost time on the field with a rare twi-night doubleheader Monday at Midway Stadium. Carleton is the visitor for the twinbill that will start at 6:00 p.m. Hamline plays at St. Mary's Tuesday (2:30 p.m.)
