Vela Gets Back In Winning Ways As Pipers Split MIAC Finale

4/30/2013 12:57:00 AM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 It didn't take Bri Vela long to start another winning streak. One day after seeing her six-gamer end in an extra inning loss, the righthander started another streak, pitching a complete game eight-hitter to help the Piper softball team to a 5-3 victory in the opening game of a doubleheader with Carleton at Meredith Field Monday afternoon.

Unfortunately, the bats went quiet in the nightcap, a 2-0 loss. As a result, the Pipers finish MIAC play with a 12-8 won-loss record. That's currently good for third place in the league. But some teams have league games remaining and the Pipers could move up a spot ... or down a place or two. Hamline, which was unable to play a dh against Concordia, has only a non-conference pair against UW-Stout on April 30 at Meredith Field on its slate before heading to the MIAC Tournament this weekend in North Mankato.

Vela walked two and fanned two in improving her won-loss mark to 11-5. The top of the order provided the offense as the first five hitters -- Bethany Hine, Jenna Dushaw, Jamie Rubbelke, Lauren Turitto and Stephanie Borndale -- knocked in a run apiece. Hine had three hits and scored twice and Samantha Mau  also had two hits.

Borndale and Cecily Abbadessa had two hits apiece in the nightcap. Krystal Tait got the starting pitching assignment on Senior Day and was nicked for two runs (one earned) in the first 1.1 innings of work. Vela and Lauren Clouston took over in relief and gave up nine hits but no runs to keep the Pipers close. Despite loading the bases in the last of the seventh, HU was unable to break through and suffered just their third shutout of the season.

Hamline will take a 16-14 overall mark into the final doubleheader with the Blue Devils. Then, they will await to see who they will face in the MIAC Tournament that will start Friday at Caswell Park.
