Box Score That was worth waiting for. Back on the field after 10 days off due to weather, the HU softball team swept Gustavus, 2-1 and 5-2, in their MIAC opener Saturday in St. Peter.
Lauren Clouston and
Bri Vela threw complete games for the Pipers, who evened their overall record at 6-6 on the season.
In the opener,
Jamie Rubbelke went 2-for-3 with a RBI to pace the HU offense. The freshman shortstop, who now leads the Pipers in batting average, singled home
Laura Randall with a third inning run to open the scoring. That was the only run for six innings.
In the seventh,
Brittany Bredemus, inserted as a pinch-runner, rode home on
Jenna Dushaw's single to make it 2-0. The run proved crucial because GAC scored in the last of the seventh before Clouston recorded the final out to end the game.
After waiting out a rain delay, HU scored early and often to win the nightcap. Randall went 2-for-4 with a RBI and leadoff hitter
Bethany Hine scored twice.
Cecily Abbadessa singled home two runs in the first inning and HU never looked back. In the third frame, Rubbelke singled, stole second and rode home on a single by fellow frosh
Stephanie Borndale. Randall later added her RBI double as part of a two-run 5th inning that pushed the Piper lead to 5-1.
Vela took it from there with a CG six-hitter to finish off the sweep.
If the weather holds, Hamline will be busy next week with three doubleheaders in four days. They will make up a postponement from last week on Monday when St. Catherine visits Meredith Field for a 3:30 p.m. twinbill. Concordia comes in on Wednesday. On Thursday, Hamline makes up another conference pair when they travel to St. Mary's. The UW-River Falls set scheduled for that day will be re-scheduled.
