Last-Gasp Rally Gives Softball Split With Wildcats

4/8/2013 9:05:00 PM

Box Score It has been written that the sign of a good team is one that can find a way to win when everything seems to be going wrong.

If so, then the 2013 version of Hamline softball may qualify.

The Pipers struggled in the field, committing seven errors in two games. But at the end of the day, they ended up where they started -- two games over .500 in the MIAC. After dropping a 11-3 decision in the opener, HU rallied from a 6-1 deficit with three last licks runs for a 7-6 win over St. Catherine at chilly Meredith Field.

Hamline stands 7-7 overall and in fourth place in the MIAC with a 3-1 standard.

But it wasn't easy. In fact, it required a late rally that required six successful moves with the Pipers down to their last out.

More on that shortly.

The Pipers never led in the opener, falling to a 6-0 by the fifth inning. HU spring to life in that frame, scoring three times on four hits with Lauren Turitto's two RBI double the big blow. But the Wildcats scored five more runs in the 6th inning to put the matter out of reach.

After a double steal gave Hamline an early lead in Game 2, SCU erupted again, scoring six times in a two-inning span. Bri Vela, however, settled down and shut the Wildcats out the rest of the way.

Her teammates' bats went to work in the 5th for three runs. Bethany Hine, who had a four-hit day, singled and jogged home when Laura Randall unloaded her second homer of the season. Jamie Rubbelke then doubled to chase the SCU starting pitcher for the day. Two outs later, Turitto, who also had a four-hit day, doubled her home and it was 6-4.

It stayed that way until the 7th. With two out and nobody on, Cecily Abbadessa singled and Brittany Bredemus ran for her. Turitto then singled sharply to center. Jenna Dushaw followed suit, scoring Bredemus and sending Turitto to third. On the ensuing throw, Dushaw moved to second.

Move manuvering followed. Lauren Clouston batted for Allie Ruter and walked on four pitches to load the bases. That brought up Stephanie Mau, who hadn't recorded a RBI all season.

Until now. Mau roped a clean liner to left to score Duhaw and Turitto and bring a silver lining to the overcast afternoon/evening.

Hamline remains home to host Concordia Wednesday at Meredith Field at 3:30 p.m.
