Pipers Win Two At Northwestern

5/6/2013 8:34:00 PM

Box Score Well, it was certainly worth the wait for the Hamline baseball team. 81 days after they started, Hamline finally ended its doubleheader with Northwestern in spectacular fashion. Buoyed perhaps by the 6-5, 8-inning win, the Pipers went back out and claimed a dramatic 8-5 win over the Eagles for a sweep of the day's action in Roseville.

HU started the day behind. They resumed a game that had been halted February 21 because of a time limit at the Metrodome. Hamline trailed 3-2 entering the top of the seventh when play resumed today.

Jordan Rubbelke, named MIAC Baseball Athlete of the Week earlier in the day, started things with a single. One out later, Evan Cordell (16) tripled to right center to tie the game. Cam Smith then singled to left to score Cordell and the Pipers had the lead. But the Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the inning to force an extra frame.

Tyler Johnson led off  the 8th by being hit by a pitch. With one out, Rubbelke walked. Mark Radmacher then whacked a double down the right field line to score both runners and give HU the lead for good. The Eagles scored once off reliever Michael Robohm but that was it. Rob Miller (2-0), who pitched the seventh inning, got the win.

In the regularly scheduled nine-inning game, HU was down 4-2 in the eighth inning when Johnson changed the flow of matters with a three-run homer for a 5-4 lead. Radmacher then put things out of reach with a three-run homer in his own right in the top of the ninth. He leads the MIAC with 41 RBI. Darby Nelson(1-1) pitched one run, two hit ball over the last 4.2 innings to get the win.

Hamline is now 23-11 overall and returns to MIAC play Tuesday with a doubleheader at St. Thomas. The first game is set for a 2:30 p.m. start. The Pipers finish the regular season Wednesday with a pair against Concordia at the Metrodome. That, too, is a 2;30 p.m. start.

St. Thomas will offer a video of Game 1 only. Click here to watch.
