Wollmuth Puts Up Stiff Fight Against Wildcats

2/15/2014 11:29:00 AM

For the second time in three days, the Hamline women's tennis team tangled with one of the favorites for the conference title.

This time, it was St. Catherine, who swept HU away, 9-0, at the U of M Tennis Center. But the Pipers didn't go down easily.

Emily Wollmuth (pictured) gave it a real battle at No. 6 singles. The Burnsville, MN freshman dropped the first set, 6-3, but charged back to force a tiebreaker with a 6-4 win. It went back and forth in the deciding set as well before Wollmuth fell by 10-7. Another first year player, Maggie Gibson, proved to be stubborn at No. 5 singles. After a 6-1 loss in the opening set, Maggie took an early lead before dropping a 6-4 decision.

Hamline is now 1-4 overall, 1-2 in the MIAC. They return to the court February 22 against St. Bendict. The match will be played in Sartell, MN and is scheduled for a 10:00 a.m. start.
