Box Score If the opening doubleheaders of the season are any indication, the Pipers' new double play duo ofÂ
Jamie Rubbelke and
Mary-Clare Couillard are going to be a handful to deal with.Â
The pair went 10-for-16 as the Pipers split a pair of 10-5 games at the Rochester (MN) dome. In the opening game of the season, HU exploded for five runs in the top of the seventh inning to break a 5-all tie and defeat St. Scholastica. Despite hitting a pair of home runs, Hamline dropped the nightcap to UW-Stevens Point by the same score.Â
Batting leadoff and playing shortstop, Jamie, a sophomore, went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a pair of RBI in the win over the Saints. Couillard, batting second and playing second base, had a spectacular college debut, had three hits and scored a run
The Pipers started fast, scoring three in the top of the first inning.
Jenna Dushaw's two-run homer was the big blow. CSS responded with five in the bottom of the frame to set the tone for a wild game.
HU tied the game with two in the fourth. The game remained stuck at 5 until the Pipers unloaded for five runs in the 6th inning. HU rapped four hits and took advantage of three errors to break the game open. Rubbelke and pinch-hitterÂ
Chelsea Koehn had RBI hits as Hamline sent 10 players to the plate.Â
Morgan Rykken, who pitched three scoreless innings, earned the win in relief.Â
In the nightcap, Rubbelke and Koehn homered but the Pointers rapped out 15 hits off four Piper pitchers. The sophomore shortstop had another three-hit game. Couillard had a pair of hits as did Koehn, who batted third and played right field. The trio were responsible for eight of the nine Hamline hits in the defeat.Â
Bri Vela, who started on the mound and went 2.1 innings, suffered the loss.Â
Hamline returns to action again March 7 with a pair of games in Rochester. The Pipers will face Dubuque (7:45 p.m.) and Luther (9:45 p.m.).Â
