Hamline's softball team opened its 10-game jaunt to Florida by getting hits at key times to record a paiur of victories in Clermont, Fla. The Pipers pushed across a pair of eighth inning runs for a 7-5 win over St. Norbert in the opener of a doubleheader. In the second game, they got a solid start from freshman
Brooke Anderson to record a 6-4 decision over Scranton.
Hamline is now 3-3 overall on the 2014 season.
The Pipers had to claw from behind to edge the Green Knights.
Down 1-0 early, HU clawed together three third inning runs on three hits and an error. SNC responded in kind, scoring four in the bottom of the same frame to grab a 5-3 lead. In the sixth,
Lauren Turitto and
Elaina Hammann had RBI singles sandwiched around a pair of errors to tie the game at 5.
It stayed that way until the eighth, Hammann's successful sacrifice bunt broke the tie for good. She later scored via a throwing error.
Sarah DeMars, who threw four innings of scoreless, 1-hit ball, got the win in relief.
The second game was not as dramatic.
Cecily Abbadessa's rbi double was the big blow as HU jumped to a 3-0 first inning lead.
Mary-Clare Couillard and
Chelsea Koehn had two hits apiece as the Pipers held off the Royals.
Brooke Chapman pitched the first five innings to get the win.
Casey Anderson allowed a run in two innings to earn the save.
Hamline faces Endicott and Rutgers-Camden today in Clermont. The first game is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m. (EDT).
