Jim Rubbelke moved his daughter
Jamie to the leadoff position in his team's batting order, he wasn;t showing favoritism. Rather, he was jumpstarting his team's offense.
The sophomore shortstop went 7-for-10 with four runs scored and knocked in three runs as Hamline swept Macalester, 12-6 and 10-5 in eight innings Saturday in St. Paul. In the process, HU moved into fourth place in the MIAC with a 5-3 record. They stand 10-11-1 overall.
Mary-Clare Couillard, the number two hitter in the Piper order, also had a big day. The freshman second sacker had two hits in each game and improved her team-leading batting average to .414 (29-70) on the season.
In the opener, Hu looked on its way to an easy win when
Lauren Turitto's two-RBI doubled capped a season high seven outburst in the third inning. But the Scots pecked away and closed within 8-6 after six innings. That's when pinch-hitter
Brooke Chapman and Rubbelke came through with back-to-back two RBI hits to put the game out of reach.
Casey Anderson, who went the first 4.1 innings, gained the win.
The second game started as HU bolted to a 4-0 lead after 1 1/2 innings. Macalester, however, struck back hard and edged ahead 5-4. Rubbelke's two-out RBI single in the sixth inning deadlocked the game at 5 and forced the extra frame.
In the eighth,
Jenna Dushaw led off with a walk, moved to third ona pair of grounders, and raced home on Anderson's pinch single. Rubbelke, who improved her average to .392 with the big day as did Couillard to load the bases.
Elaina Hammann cleared them with a three-RBI double and HU went on to gain the sweep. Hamline is 4-0-1 in extra inning games this season.
Sarah DeMars, who pitched the final three innings, earned the victory.
Hamline plays a non-conference doubleheader at UW-River Falls Sunday. The first game will start at 1:00 p.m.
