Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 14 hits in a doubleheader is not necessarily an impressive number. However, when you utilize those hits to score 11 runs and win two games in the process ... well ... that's something to crow about.
Hamline's baseball team did just that Sunday in recording 6-3 and 5-4 wins over Gustavus Adolphus at Midway Stadium. The Pipers crept back over the .500 mark at 9-8 and improved to 3-4 overall with the sweep on a gray, chilly day.
In the first game,
Harley Thompson whacked a pair of doubles (one of which plated two runs) and
Jimmy Kiefer added a two-RBI single to back the pitching of
Matt Connell. The lefty walked six batters but allowed just two hits to gain the win on the mound. In addition to Kiefer and Thompson,
Andy Sammon also had two hits.
In the second game, starting pitcher
Matt Eickman was victimized by two untimely errors (one of which was his) that led to four unearned runs. HU manufactured a run without a hit in the second and came up three more (helped by a throwing error) on just two hits in the third inning. For the next five innings, they managed just one hit. (It was by Kiefer, who started the day hitting just .062 but shot over the .200 mark with a four hit effort.)
In the last of the ninth, though,
Shay Torgerson worked a one out walk.
Cody Berumen forced Torgerson at second but beat the relay to keep the inning alive. Connell moved Berumen to third with a sharp single to left.
Evan Cordell then lofted a fly ball that dropped at the feet of the GAC left fielder. Berumen raced home with the winning run to end the day on a happy note.
Rob Miller pitched four scoreless innings of relief to earn his second win of the week. The lefty, who is now 9-1 for his Hamline career, had an excellent week in relief, throwing 10.1 scoreless innings in three outings, earning two wins.
Although it wasn't planned this way, Hamline will get a chance to go over the .500 mark in the MIAC when they face Concordia Tuesday in Collegeville, MN. This is a makeup for the games that were lost yesterday due to poor field conditions in Moorhead. The Pipers' scheduled game that day with the University of Minnesota has been postponed. HU will face Bethel Wednesday at Midway. Both doubleheaders will start at 2:30 p.m.
