Top Of Order Helps Piper Baseball To Split

4/15/2014 9:34:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Leadership starts at the top. In this case, it is the top of the Hamline baseball batting order that is doing the leading.

Matt Connell, Evan Cordell and Cam Smith (pictured) produced 10 hits and six RBI as Hamline split a doubleheader with Concordia in Collegeville Tuesday. The Pipers dropped the opening game, 7-3, but rallied for an 8-1 second game decision to move back over the .500 mark at 10-9 overall. HU is 4-5 in the MIAC.

Connell, the leadoff batter in both games, was 3-9 with two RBI. Cordell, the No. 2  hitter who leads the team with a .500 batting average, had a 4-8 day with three RBI while Smith, batting in the number three spot in one game and the cleanup spot in another , was 3-7 with four RBI.

In the first game, the Pipers were trailing 3-0 in the fifth inning when Cordell doubled home one run and, after an out, Smith plated two more with a double that tied the game at 3. The Cobbers, however, untied matters in the bottom of the inning and added three in the sixth to take the win.

The Cordell-Smith combination ignited the second game rout. It was scoreless in the third inning when Cordell, batting with the bases loaded, grounded out to drive in a run. Smith followed with another two RBI double and the Pipers never looked back. HU added a run in the fifth inning and Connell sent home two more with a single in the sixth. The Pipers added two in the seventh and that was more than enough for Nicholas Roessler, who gave up an unearned run on six hits in 6.2 innings of work to earn the win. Rob Miller, who threw 10.1 scoreless innings last week, added another 2.1 frames to his skein, to wrap up the victory.

Hamline, which is just a game and a half out of the last playoff spot in the MIAC, faces Bethel Wednesday in a doubleheader at Midway Stadium. The first game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
