Pipers Swipe Four Bases But Lose Pair To Bethel

4/18/2014 8:56:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Hamline stole a season high four bases but Bethel held them at bay when they had to, escaping with a 2-1 second game win and a sweep of their Friday doubleheader at Midway Stadium.

The Pipers, who fell 14-3 in the opener, drooped to 10-11 overall, 4-7 in the MIAC.

The top of the order continued to produce for Hamline. The trio of Matt Connell, Evan Cordell and Cam Smith combined for nine hits, four runs scored and three stolen bases.

In the second game, Connell and Smith combined to give the Pipers an early lead. In the third inning, Connell doubled, moving to third on Smith's one out single. The pair then pulled off a double steal with Connell crossing the plate. The Pipers kept getting runners on base but the Royals would not let anyone else pass. Hamline finished the game with a frustrating total of 14 Left On Base for the game

Matt Eickman started and went a solid seven innings, holding the Royals to one run on five hits, walking nobody. Rob Miller (3-2) relieved him and was tagged for a run in the ninth. The Pipers, however, didn't give easily. Connell started the last of the ninth with a single. Cordell and Smith were retired but Jacob Picht was safe on an error to move Connell into scoring position at second base. That was as close as HU would get, though.

In the first game, each team plated a first inning run. BU came back with three in the second, adding three in the fourth and breaking the game open with five in the fifth. Connell (1-2) started and took the loss.

HU is off until April 22 when they return to Midway for a doubleheader against Carleton. The first game is slated for 2:30 p.m.
