Baseball Loses MIAC Opener; Second Game Suspended

4/2/2014 9:12:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 After not playing for a week, it took the Hamline baseball team a full game to find their hitting shoes again. They did so but, after a long battle, the Pipers ended up with a game that still needs to be finished.

Welcome to life in the MIAC.

With Midway Stadium not ready for play, the Pipers moved their doubleheader against St. Mary's to Winona. The Pipers dropped the opener, 6-0, but brought their bats to life in a wild second game that was suspended after nine innings with the score 9-9. The game will have to be picked up in the 10th inning at a later date.

Dan Moro had two hits and Evan Cordell extended his hitting streak to 10 games in a row in the opener with a single. But HU could only push two runners as far as third base.

Under ruled adopted this year, the second game of doubleheaders will go nine innings (unless the opener runs into extra frames). That proved to be to Hamline's advantage as an eighth inning run produced the deadlock.

The Pipers were in trouble early, trailing 9-3 when they came to bat in the fifth inning. HU then erupted for five runs with Chris Zeller's two RBI single serving as a key blow. Shay Torgerson's RBI single in the eighth inning tied the game  at 9. After a scoreless ninth, the umpires called the game due to darkness. It will have to be finished later on.

Moro, also had three RBI, had two more hits in the suspended game to lead a 10-hit assault. Torgerson and Matt Connell did likewise for HU.

Under NCAA rules, none of the statistics go into the book until the game is officially completed.

Hamline is 6-5 overall, 0-1 in the MIAC. If the weather gods smile on them, they will play a pair at St. Thomas Saturday, April 5. The first game is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.
