Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Andy Sammon helped his teammates forget a tough start to the day. After surrendering three runs to Carleton before even getting to bat, the Pipers steadied themselves and, thanks to Sammon's last lick hit, rallied for a 5-4 win in the opener of a doubleader at Midway Stadium Wednesday.
HU nearly did it again in the nightcap, leaving the tying run in scoring position in a 3-1 loss.
After the Knights grabbed the early lead, HU struck back quickly.
Evan Cordell led off th ebottom of the first with his second home run of the season. Later, Sammon's single brought home
Cam Smith to make it a 3-2 game. Cordell truipled and scored on a grounder in the second to tie the game but the Knights regained the edge with a fifth inning run.
But the Pipers retain their flarr of late inning dramatics. Smith walked to start the last of the seventh.
Harley Thompson moved him to third with a booming double.
Leo Zerr ran for Thompson.
Jacob Picht then plated Smith with a single and Sammon finished things off with a single to score Zerr.
It made a winning pitcher out of
Matt Eickman, who had thrown six inning sof noble relief, allowing just one run.
HU got another excellent effort in the second game as
Matt Connell gave up a single run on three hits over six innings. But the Pipers could do nothing on their end with Carleton's Jordan Baker. The Knights added a pair in the eighth inning.
And they needed them because the Pipers, held to just three hits over eight innings, dished out three in the ninth. Connell tripled with one out, scoring on a Smith grounder. Thompson then singled and Picht doubled him over to third. But that was as far as Hamline could get.
The Pipers fell to 11-12 overall, 5-8 in the MIAC.
A busy week continues Wednesday when Hamline plays on the U of Minnesota at Siebert Field in a single nine-inning game, starting at 4:05 p.m.
On Thursday, HU is back at Midway to finish a game against St. Mary's that was suspended with the score 9-9 after nine innings. The teams will play a non-conference game afterwards.
