Hamline whacked out 15 hits, bunching nine together in a two-inning span for a 7-4 win over St. Catherine in the opener of softball doubleheader at Meredith Field. Unfortunately, the Pipers could only muster four hits in the second game, absorbing a 3-2 loss.
Mary-Claire Couillard had three hits and
Katie Koren, Lauren Turitto (pictured),
Jenna Dushaw and
Lauren Clouston added two each for the Pipers.
Brooke Chapman threw a complete game nine-hitter to push her won-loss record to 4-0 on the season.
HU scored a first inning only to see the Wildcats scored twice in the third and fourth frames for a 4-1 edge. The Pipers, however, roared back with four runs and five hits in the last of the fourth to take the lead for good at 5-4.
Cecily Abbadessa's two-RBI single capped the outburst. A double steal and a Couillard RBI single padded the final margin.
In the second game, Hamline was down 2-0 in the third when Couillard and
Jamie Rubbelke delivered back-to-back two out RBI singles to tie the score. Unfortunately, HU managed no more hits after that inning and gave up a fifth inning run that proved to be the difference.
Sarah DeMars (2-2) went the first five innings on the mound and took the loss.
Hamline is now 8-11-1 overall, 3-3 in the MIAC.
They return to action Saturday with a pair of games at Macalester.
