Box Score 2 They had a week to think about it. The HU baseball team used that time to gear themselves to come through with big hits when needed and delivered a sweep of St. Olaf in Northfield Saturday. The Pipers won two very dissimilar games, taking the opener, 4-3 and winning a 13-9 slugfest in the second game.
In the opener,
Chris Zeller's three run homer gave the Pipers an early lead. But the Oles clawed their way back and tied the game at 3 after five innings. In the sixth,
Harley Thompson (who would play a key role in the second game) was hit by a pitch to open the inning and moved to second on a single by
Andy Sammon. Dan Moro was inserted as a pinchrunner for Thompson and came home with the winning run when
Shay Torgerson was safe on an error.
Nicholas Roessler pitched the final 2.2 innings, giving up just one hit to get the win.
The second game was a free-swinging affair from the get-go. STO scored four in the first inning. Zeller drilled a two RBI triple to spearhead a four run second inning outburst that tied the game. The Oles got a run in the bottom of the second but HU claimed the lead at 6-5 on Moro's two RBI single in the top of the third.
The lead didn't last long. STO tossed another four spot at Hu and led by 9-6 after just three innings.
The Pipers fought back slowly with single runs in the next three innings to knot the game at 9.
It stayed that way until the eighth when a pair of singles and a walk set the stage for Thompson. The big fella unloaded a grand slam to right to give HU a lead that held up the rest of the day. Every starter in the Hamline order had at least one hit in the 20-hit total.
Rob Miller, who threw 6.2 innings of shutout relief, got the win.
HU is 15-14 overall, 8-10 in the MIAC. The Pipers finish off conference play Sunday with a twinbill at Macalester. The games start at noon.
