Box Score HU senior forward
Jordan Verleye isn't likely to forget this weekend for a while.Â
Neither will St. Olaf.
On Friday, Verleye broke away for an overtime winning goal.
On Saturday, she had two goals and two assists as the Piper women's hockey team battled St. Olaf to a 4-4 OT tie at Oscar Johnson Arena.
It was a wild affair that saw the Pipers rally from behind to grab a lead, give up a late third period goal and then fight off a two-player disadvantage in overtime. When it was all over, HU had a three-point weekend and is now 3-10-2 overall, 1-5-2 in the MIAC.
Verleye got the game off to an electric start when she broke free for a shorthanded goal just 3:52 into the game. But the Oles responded with a power play marker of their own to knot the game at 1.Â
Kelsey Rafferty gave HU a 2-1 lead late in the period.Â
The Oles wiped out that lead and took a 3-2 edge in the second. Verleye evened matters when she took a feed from
Chelsea Koehn at 14:28. It looked like the period would end that way but, with just two seconds remaining in it, Verleye found
Haleigh Bolton in front of a crowded net to make it 4-3 after two.
HU goalie
Mary Shefveland, who made 27 saves, was  busy in the third period, stopping 10 shots. The Oles, however, took advantage of having an extra attacker on the ice and tied the game at 19:48.Â
That set up the hectic overtime. Shefveland was penalized for high sticking 17 seconds into the extra session, Megan Gjere was sent off at 1:43. Hamline fought off that problem and suddenly gained an advantage when St. Olaf drew a penalty at 4:01. The Oles got hit with another one at 4:44 but the Pipers couldn't convert and the teams had to settle for the tie.Â
Hamline returns to action next weekend against St. Thomas. The teams play in Mendota Heights Friday (7:30 p.m.) and head to Oscar Johnson gthe next night for a 7:00 p.m. game.Â
