Box Score It was the type of game that tests players and coaches' willpower. In the end, it was HU winger
Jaimee Nowicki who solved the question of who would get the goal that would decide matters. The sophomore came out of the penalty box to score the only goal of the game midway in the third period and lift the Hamline women's hockey team to a 1-0 win over St. Benedict in St. Cloud Saturday afternoon.
Jessica Cole recorded 23 saves in goal in goal as the Pipers improved to 3-0-1 in the MIAC -- their best start in school history -- and 3-2-2 overall with the victory.
HU fired a season high 40 shots on goal in Friday's 5-1 home ice win over the Blazers. They went one better Saturday with Nowicki,
Chelsea Koehn and
Jessica Goldberg leading the way with six apiece. But CSB goalie Angel Hillstrom refused to yield and the game remained scoreless for more than 50 minutes.
Nowicki drew a penalty for tripping at 9:03 of the third period and the Blazers threatened. It was Cole's turn to bat away shots. The sophomore, who has been in the nets for three consecutive wins, did so.
Shortly after Nowicki exited the penalty box,
Megan Lawry, a former Blazer, broke in for a shot that was stopped. Nowicki (17) made good on her try for her third goal of the season. The Blazers pulled Hillstrom for a sixth attacker with nearly two minutes remaining but the Pipers kept them at bay the rest of the way for the win.
Hamline doesn't have a lot of time to enjoy their solid start. They play a non-conference game at UW-Eau Claire Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
