Box Score Hamline's women's hockey broke out of the gate fast and never let up on St. Benedict Friday night.
Chelsea Koehn scored twice and
Mary Shefveland earned her first college shutout as the Pipers snapped a five-game losing streak with a solid 4-0 win over the Blazers at Oscar Johnson Arena.Â
HU set St. Ben's on their heels by scoring three times in the first 5:57 of play and  never looked back, finishing with a 33-29 edge in shots on goal. Jordan Verleye and Kelsey Rafferty had the other goals to help Hamline improve to 4-15-2 on the season, 2-10-2 in MIAC play.
Verleye delivered the initial blow, batting a rebound in the net 2:17 into the game. Rafferty upped it to 2-0 at 5:27. 30 seconds later, Koehn broke loose on the left side and fired a shot home to make it 3-0.
Shefveland took over from there. She stopped a dozen CSB shots in the first period and was particularly sharp as the Pipers killed off five penalties. It was the first Hamline shutout since
Sarah Schneekloth blanked the Blazers in a 0-0 OT tie on January 26, 2013.
Koehn clinched matters by hitting the empty net with 1:22 left in the game. The junior was a force all night, leading all shooters with eight shots on goal.
Hamline returns to action next weekend with a home and home series against Augsburg. The teams play Friday, February 13 in Minneapolis and Saturday, February 14 at Oscar Johnson. Both games begin at 7:00 p.m.
