Anderson's Pitching Highlights Wild Softball Sweep

4/11/2015 8:29:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Normally, a day when the visiting MIAC softball team has to rally in the seventh inning in both games to tie the games and then win in extra innings would be the only story of the day. But Hamline sophomore pitcher Casey Anderson's heroics upstaged even those feats.

The Pipers up their first place mark to 9-1 and 16-6 overall with a 4-3, 14-inning and an 6-4, eight winning win at St. Catherine Saturday. Anderson's strong right arm was one of the main reasons why.

The  Cooper grad was called on to relieve Game 1 starter Sarah DeMars in the second inning after the latter was hit by a line drive. She never left the Piper mound the rest of the day. In the first game, she tossed 13 innings, giving up just two earned runs and fanning 10 before the Pipers finally eked out the win. In the second game, she went the distance, again surrendering just two earned runs while throwing a seven-hitter.

Her totals for the day: 21 IP, 16H , 4 R, 13 K. Not a bad day's work.

Anderson had lots of company in the hero department. HU was held off the scoreboard in the first six innings of the opener. In the seventh, Katie Koren opened with a walk and skipped to third on Samantha Mau's single. Mau had taken second on the throw to third. Elaina Hammann replaced her on the bases. Jamie Rubbelke then hit a sacrifice fly to left that scored Koren with Hammann also moving up a base. Mary-Clare Couillard followed with a bunt that scored Hammann and the game took on a different look.

HU scored in the 10th but the Wildcats promptly got that one back. The game headed to the 14th -- the longest game anybody can ever remember. Rubbelke singled and moved to second on a passed ball. Couillard singled her to third. One out later, Anderson (who else?) dropped down the sacrifice bunt that plated Rubbelke with the winning run.

There was more drama to come. The Wildcats clawed their way to a 4-0 lead after three innings. HU got a run back in the fourth but that was it until another wild seventh occurred. Mau was in the middle of this one, too, starting matters with a one out single. With two out, Rubbelke kept things afloat with a RBI single. Couillard followed with a two RBI double and we were off to extra innings for the second time.

Anderson ignited this rally with her only hit of the day -- a double. On the same play, she moved to third and on to home on a throwing error by the SCU shortstop. Koren followed with a double, eventually scoring on a dropped fly ball. Anderson retired the Wildcats and the Pipers had one of the wildest doubleheader wins in school ... and perhaps, MIAC ... history.

Hamline has now won five games in a row, and 14 of their last 15 games. They will have little time to rest on their laurels. The Pipers face Concordia (9-12, 3-7)  Sunday at Meredith Field. Game time for the dh is 1:00 p.m.
