Baseball Team Sweeps Away Augsburg

4/8/2015 8:22:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 One game was dramatic down to the final pitch. The other was a rout from almost the first pitch. The different methods had the same results, though as Hamline won twice over Augsburg at Parade Stadium, 3-2 and 8-1, to go back over .500 for the season at 12-11. Hamline also vaulted past St. John's into a tie with the Auggies for seventh place in the conference at 3-5.

The opener was tight all the way. Evan Cordell's bases loaded walk in the top of the first inning gave HU an early edge. Brandon Rushmeyer gave up just a solo run in 4.1 innings of work. The Auggies pushed across an unearned run in the 6th. But this was only a prelude to a wild final frame.

With two out and nobody on, Collin Olstad walked and Mitch Benson ran for him. Matt Connell then singled to right and Benson galloped to third. Connell promptly stole second. Dan Moro, down to his last strike, singled up the middle to score two runs and give HU the lead.

There was more theatrics to come.

Shay Torgerson, the eventual winning pitcher, fanned the first batter but gave up three straight singles to load the bases. He induced Andrew Julkowski to ground back to him on the mound but the Pipers only got the force out at home. Torgerson bore down and retired Abe Welckle on a grounder to end the game.

The Pipers took the momentum into the second game and settled the issue early by jumping to a 5-0 lead after 2 1/2 innings. Andy Sammon was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Jacob Picht was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Cordell and Olstad also two hits in a 12-hit outburst. Meanwhile, five pitchers kept the Auggies in check until the last of the ninth inning. Alex Bauermeister, the second of those pitchers, earned the win with 1,2 innings of one hit work. Aaron Stoneberg threw three innings, the longest of any HU hurler.

The Pipers now head to their new home -- CHS Field in downtown St. Paul -- for their first games this Saturday, April 11. Concordia will be the opposition for the 1:00 p.m. doubleheader. There will be pre-game festivities, music, giveaways and a lot more. Gates open at at noon. There is no admission charge at HU baseball games.

Fans should take note that I-94 will be closed both ways Saturday. There are lots near the park and onstreet parking as well. The Green Line, however, will be in service and runs right to the ballpark, which is adjacent to the Farmer's Market.
